A major part of what experimental art (as in: non-popular) does, is to absorbe the aural sensations around us - highlighting details or elusive moments, thus changing our perception of the world. Think of field recordings, think of the typical sounds of water flowing and percolating through many pieces. “Brusnika”, too, is a snapshot of the ear. And it takes us back to a long-forgotten place.
As the titles of this two-track Vinyl 7’’ already indicate, we are off to a dream of dawn, a sweet madrugadal memory. “Appears Evening” is the moment, when the shephard is bringing in his flock and silence is slowly falling over the greyishly-green hills. A mockingbird may be heard in the distance, there is the crackling of a bonfire and the silhouette of a dog may still be moving close to the sheep (or is it a sleepy wolf?). But apart from that, there is nothing but a frozen second in time, as if everything were happening inside the frame of painted picture. As the sun sets, a monotonous bass is beating like the heart of the hills and glassy streaks of translucent flickerings float in the air. Then all is silence. B-Side “Animals all have fallen asleep” is the shephard lying in his lonely room, his eyes ever-open, his gaze fixed to the ceiling. The light of the moon trickles in through the window, left ajar on this hot summer’s night. The wind carries in the sounds of the elves singing in the nearby woods and the waves are crashing on the white hills of the seaside, miles and miles away. With each second that passes, they become fainter, loosing themselves in the corridors of the night. Something’s rustling in the kitchen.
Drone Records have called this a “shamanistic atmosphere” and they are right. The mystery of “Brusnika” lies in its distortion of time and space: Out of nothing, a vast contintent is born and eternity hatches from the egg of an instant. And suddenly, those Jungean archetypes are flooding in, images of frenzied intensity and unwordly calmness. The world around you will never be the same.
