Hi! How are you? Where are you?
Hi, fabulous as always, thanks for asking.. I currently live in Tampa Bay, FL, USA.
What's on your schedule right now?
US Armed Forces World Tour # 3 - Don't know where it will take me this time, last time it was Asia and before that Europe. Also, the production of my fifth CD "The Power of Music" in collaboration with author Esateys, as well as the release of a CD/DVD based on the works of fine artist Jim Warren.
If you hadn't chosen for music, what do you think you would do right now?
Acting, most likely, as it is another highly artistic form of
self-expression, different from music, yet very rewarding. I would always
be in the performing arts, though. I love it.
What or who was your biggest influence as an artist?
Sergei Rachmaninov, Sviatoslav Richter, Liberace.
What's the hardest part about being a musician and what's the best?
1) Promoting oneself without any external help that is not motivated by
anything other than your own talent.
2) Being able to touch people with your music.
What's your view on the classical music scene at present? Is there a crisis?
Unfortunately, it's a very limited market of classical music lovers. No
there's no crisis, classical music has survived for centuries, and there's
always will be someone with good taste who will appreciate the beauty and
the refinement of this genre.
Some feel there is no need to record classical music any more, that it's all
been done before. What do you tell them?
Not true. Every interpretation of the same piece by different artists is
unique and there are no two recodings of the same pieces that are exactly
alike.
What constitutes a good live performance in your opinion?
Reaching out to your audience, not forgetting they also exist, and not just
your music. Pouring your heart and soul into your performance, and giving
your very best.
What's your approach to performing on stage?
Playing a variety of different styles, something that everyone will enjoy,
as my audiences are oftem made of three generations of music lovers.
Engaging people in my performance. Talking to them about the pieces or the
composers on the program, if they know the background of the piece, they
tend to appreciate it much more. I've been told to have a sense of humor
when addressing my audiences, so I guess that's part of my approach, too.
What does the word 'interpretation' mean to you?
It's how a performer brings the music to life from the scores, using his/her
imagination, knowledge and expertise.
True or false: It is the duty of an artist to put his personal emotions into
the music he plays.
True
True or false: Music is my first love
True
True or false: People need to be educated about classical music, before they
can really appreciate it.
True (in some cases).
You are given the position of artistic director of a concert hall. What
would be on your program for this season?
Rachmaninov concerto #3, Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, My originals :)
What's your favourite classical CD at the moment?
Beethoven The Piano Concertos Vladimir Ashkernazy Chicago Symphony Orchestra Sir Georg Solti.
Have you ever tried playing a different instrument? If yes, how good were
you at it?
Yes, organ and vocals. Not as good as on the piano, but always working to
improve myself.
