Thor's Rubber Hammer: Celebrate Noisy Improvisation on “Ecstatic Jazz Duos”
Tobias
Washingtonm DC-based experimental label Thor’s Rubber Hammer Productions have announced a series of 12’’ Split-releases, involving some of the major names of the scene. Described as a “juicy free-jazz series” by the outfit’s head-viking Lars Gotrich, “Ecstatic Jazz Duos” will present three head-on collisions involving six projects from the realms of Free Jazz, Improvisation, Industrial, Noise and the Avantgarde – each of them contributing a Vinyl-side of their own. While the “Ecstatic Jazz Duos” are already strictly limited to 500 copies, there is an even more exclusive option of subscribing to the entire collection. 100 lucky fans will be treated to additional buttons, stickers and (most importantly) a CDr containing valuable bonus material. Even though there as yet no samples of the material available, the line-up certainly looks impressive on paper and with the radical focus on quality and the untypically (for a Noise- label) selective attitude typical of Thor’s Rubber Hammer, the series is more than likely to deliver on its promise.
While Better People, whom we portrayed on tokafi only last month, is noteably absent from the roster, the other artists involved in the “Ecstatic Jazz Duos” series more than make up for that. Ranging from Sun-Ra influenced sounds courtesy of Talibam! and the drone-infected Gloom-Jazz of the Wasteland Jazz-Unit for the first volume to Thurston Moore’s personal darlings DWMTG and John Zorn-protegees Jeremiah Cymerman & Matthew Welch on later editions, these slabs of Vinyl can be expected to be entertaining, adventurous and demanding at the same time.
The first volume of “Ecstatic Jazz Duos” is scheduled for a late-July, early-August release.
