Review/ Masala: "Drifter"

img  Tobias

Masala is a wonderful Indian word translating to “Mix”; juxtapositions and innovation are therefore the main drivers for this French trio.

Implicated in various other projects (Treponem Pal, Tronckh, Parabellum…), Masala have finally found themselves after 3 years and have now created their first full-length album,“The Drifter”. The music mainly refers to rock, flirting with different genres from jazz to hardcore, touching upon reggae and experimental elements while passing through. After hearing the whole album, you´ll think that the word Masala was especially created for them.

The influence of jazz is pervasive throughout the album. Moreover, the bass play sounds particularly entertaining, turning into a major colour on Masala´s palette. The vocals are unique and complex, exploring pop-rock, hardcore, storytelling, thrusting, whispered, charming… Some of you may notice a slight inclination towards the Red Hot Chili Peppers here.

All songs are written in English, except for “Phonetique mentale” which is sung in english and french; maybe something that they should use more often in the future.
Masala show an impressive confidence reinforced by their muscular musical skills.

The album was recorded at Studio Destruction, mixed by Fred (Watcha) and mastered by Raph at STUDIO DIAM´S Paris.
