Review/ Coronatus: "Porta Obscura"
TobiasJust one year after the practically unnoticed “Lux Noctis”, Coronatus are back more determined than ever. This time they armed themselves with two lethal weapons with Carmen R.Schäfer (soprano vocals) and Ada Flechtner (rock vocals).
Pretty hard not to compare this band to Nightwish, as the music itself and the soprano vocals are in some regards similar to Nightwish´s, However, don't let yourself be fooled, this band is not an other copy of the Finnish band. I´ve personally never been a Gothic Metal listener but I was totally bewitched by Coronatus.
Porta Obscura is filled with a powerful plethora of potential hits; titles such as “Fallen” and “Mein Herz” (“My Heart”) will undoubtedly attain huge success on the German market. On an international level, meanwhile, the songs “In Silence” and the great “Beauty in Black” (nothing to do with Therion´s Mini CD) could easily install themselves in the Charts.
The different styles of these two singers, blended with Latin, German and English lyrics, perfectly suit Coronatus' melodic Gothic Metal. The comparison to Nightwish could be pushed to the maximum as the album was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studio (Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Children of Bodom etc..). Which, despite the aforementioned idiosyncratic qualities of this forceful formation, begs the question: Did Massacre Records find the new heir to the throne of Nightwish?
2 Bonus Track are included in the digipack version.
