Boris: Czechoslovakia / Saade: Vrah
Tobias FischerA tour split-7inch and already Boris' third take on „Czechoslovakia“. And it's by far their heaviest and most brutal: A mere suggestion and almost sketch-like on the CD-version 2011's Heavy Rocks, it was extended into a perfect album closer on the double vinyl edition, a showdown of contrasts in between ambiance and killershredding.
Here, on a smaller format, „Czechoslovakia“ attains monumental dimensions: Boris, experts in working with improvisation and collaboration, invited tourmate and saade-frontman Tomas Zakopal to man the microphone. By bringing his voice to the fore, the result is massive, especially thanks to the combination of Zakopal's shouts and what are probably Czech lyrics. Powerful indeed - and indispensable to boot.
Compared to Boris' skilful brutality, Saade are far more garagy and abrasive, almost like a punk-band at times, placing grainy guitar sounds on top of dryly galloping drums and one-note singing. Do you need this? Again, the answers is yes.
